Hoodoo comes from African traditions of spirituality and healing. It is not about curses, voodoo or devil worship. Hoodoo is a tool of survival for those families that were kidnapped and forced into slavery. The traditions of healing and spiritual wisdom were the key to the survival for many enslaved men and women. The traditions were passed orally throughout the Mississippi Delta. Many families in Memphis have kept the practices of rootwork and conjure alive for several generations. The museum seeks to honor the families and traditions featured in our exhibits. For this reason we maintain contact with members of the community that are torchbearers of these traditions. We are accountable to the communities we represent in our work. It is important for us to be able to demonstrate honor, respect and acknowledgement of those in the tradition. It is our focus to provide education to the public about these traditions and the secret history that this culture has endured in the Mid-South.
